Accented Glory listens to our fans, followers, and customers! Many complaints against hair accessories, especially headbands, is that the constant tension cause headaches. Headband tightness also place stress on hairline edges. Our goal to provide quality designs lead us to our design station. We asked how can we resolve these problems?

Accented Glory's solution is stylish adjustable headband designs that allow our customers to control the tension! Not only did we solve the problems of tension headache and hairline stress, but we took it to the next level and used materials that don't cause damage to kinky, coily, and curly hair. Our Double Cowrie Shell Headband is our latest design and is created with satin ribbon. Accented Glory's African Print Headband designs are also satin lined. Satin lined headband designs don't dry out or cause breakage to natural hair.

Our adjustable headband designs are also created with closed knit elastic. When the elastic is stretched you don't have to worry about your hair getting caught in the elastic. Having natural hair friendly designs are very important to us. Plus we're team Save The Edges!

Too often, hair accessories get a bad rap and are accused of causing damage to hair. One of the primary suspects is the headband. As a hair accessory designer and natural, I embrace opportunities to educate other fellow naturals on what to look for when purchasing and styling with hair accessories. So for the record, it's not the headband that's the problem. It’s the misuse of it, bad fit, or material used to create it that’s an issue.

As naturals, we must be mindful of protecting our hairline when choosing hair accessories. We all desire those perfect flat edges. Often times we use too tight ties, bands, or scrunchies to achieve this look, which cause damage to our hairline. I recommend using hair care products to lay down your edges and not hair accessories.

So how do we know if our hair accessory is a proper fit? The accessory doesn’t hurt - our headbands should not cause pain or headaches. Many people experience headband headaches, because their hair accessory is too tight. Headaches caused by headbands are known as external compression headaches that are the result of continuous pressure on forehead, scalp, and behind the ears.

Naturals need to also avoid headbands created with fabrics that will cause friction with textured hair and dry out the hair. Course fabrics, such as tweed, can cause friction and lead to breakage. Some cotton fabrics have a tendency to dry out hair as well. Many naturals already struggle with dry hair and there is no need to further contribute to the dryness. Softer fabrics with a smooth finish like satin are better suited for naturals because they don't cause friction or dryness.

Adjustable headbands are a great solution for headband headaches because they allow the wearer to adjust and control the amount of tension placed on their head. Also, being able to control the tension protects the hairline from stress. In addition to adjusting headband tension, we should always moisturizer our hair before wearing hair accessories. This too will minimize damage to our hair. As naturals, we can safely rock a cute headband and save our edges at the same time!

Accented Glory has kicked off "Ask Our Visionary"! Below is our visionary's FIRST question. Click AOV to submit a question to her and she'll answer your question in a blog post on Accessory Diva!

How can naturals who wear short hair use Accented Glory hair accessories?

From brush cuts to TWA's (teeny weeny afros), Accented Glory hair accessories embrace all lengths and can be worn by anyone. Our headbands and head wraps are great hair accents for brush cut naturals. TWA's can rock our headbands, floral hairpins, and head wraps.

Narrow headbands (1" or less) worn slightly behind hairline looks best with short hair. Select printed fabric, feathered, and jeweled headbands to dress up your look. Short haired naturals can also rock narrow headbands bohemian style around the forehead!

When selecting floral hairpins, short haired naturals should choose a moderate sized flower. Remember hair accessories are accents; your natural hair is beautiful, so it should be the main attraction! If you're not allergic, natural flowers are a nice touch. Artificial flowers can be used for both a casual or dressy look. My favorite is printed petals. They allow you to express your style and personality. Accented Glory will be adding back our floral hairpins to our online store in the Spring!

Head wraps come in a variety of sizes and don't have to cover your entire head. Someone with a brush cut could rock a bandana as a head wrap. Naturals with TWA's can use a scarf as a head wrap and tie it behind their hairline, exposing some hair in front.
