Enjoyed my conversation with Hindsight The Podcast! I had an opportunity to share about my entrepreneurial journey and lessons learned. I also shared about my creative process for my accessory designs. Check it out on YouTube below. No look is complete without great accessories! Tonya – Visionary Designer Spring is quickly approaching! The beanies and hats will be coming off and our natural kinks, coils, and curls will be free to shine. I am so ready and here to give you some hair accessory styling tips. When styling natural hair, just know all hair accessories ARE NOT created equal especially when it comes to headband designs for natural hair. As a natural and accessory designer, I know from experience that some hair accessories are more natural hair friendly than others. When styling with headband designs, the width of the accessory is something to consider. For example, if you have short or thin hair, designs with a width less than an inch are best. They do not cover too much of your hair and can give the appearance of thicker hair because more hair is pushed together. On the other hand, if you have long or thick hair a wider band would be better. For those with long hair I recommend wearing the headband closer to the hairline and those with thick hair wider headbands cover more area and can be seen despite hair volume. My accessory brand Accented Glory has a variety of headband designs of various widths. Another factor to consider when styling natural hair is the material used to create the headband. Some materials like nylon and elastic can be harsh on natural hair and cause breakage. To avoid this issue, look for hair accessories made from softer materials such as silk or satin. Satin lined headbands are especially great for styling with natural hair because they help reduce friction and keep your kinks, coils, and curls from drying out. My headband designs are satin lined and created with materials that will minimize damage to natural hair. Finally, when styling natural hair with hair accessories, you want to make sure that the headband fits properly. A headband that is too tight can cause damage to your hair and headaches, while one that is too loose can slip off easily. My advice would be to purchase adjustable headband designs. All Accented Glory headband designs are adjustable for these very reasons. My customers can control how tight their headband fits; protecting their hair from breakage and avoiding headband headaches. Who is ready to go outside? Before you go, remember that there are certain headband designs and materials that are better suited for styling your natural hair. Satin lined headbands are a great choice since they help reduce friction and keep your kinks, coils, and curls moisturized. Also, make sure your headband is a good fit by purchasing adjustable headband designs where you control how tight they fit. Enjoy the Spring in style!
