When purchasing hair accessories, it’s not a one size fit ALL for Naturals. As Naturals, we must be decisive when choosing hair accessories to maintain our healthy tresses. We don’t want to choose accessories that can cause damage to our hair. Accented Glory’s blog series of best hair accessory features for Naturals will assist in choosing proper accents for our natural hair styles. The first feature we will address is fabric. Because our natural hair is textured, we need to avoid cloth that will cause friction with our hair. Coarse fabrics such as tweed can cause hair breakage. Softer cloths like satins don’t cause friction and are better suited for Naturals. Some cotton fabrics have a tendency to dry out hair. Many Naturals already struggle with dry hair and there’s no need to further contribute to the dryness. In defense of cotton cloth, cottons with a satin finish (soft and slight shine) works well for naturals. As far as head wraps, Naturals should choose fabrics that are breathable such as cotton gauze and chiffon. Cotton gauze is a “good” cotton because it’s soft, light weight, and airy, which allows air flow to the scalp. A sweaty scalp creates an environment for bacteria growth which we definitely don’t want! At our online store, we have hair accessories that are specifically made for Naturals. Even though the materials used in our designs are Natural “friendly”, we still recommend that you properly moisturize your hair before styling. Proper moisture and care is the #1 way to ensure healthy curls.
